For that quarter, the facility earned an overall CMS rating of five, surpassing Colorado’s statewide average rating for nursing homes, which stands at 3.2. CMS evaluates facilities based on health inspection results, staffing numbers, and quality of resident care.
Data show Gunnison Valley Health Senior Care Center averaged 29.1 residents per day in the first quarter of 2026, offering a total of 50 beds. The facility is not affiliated with a hospital.
During that timeframe, three fines totaling $14,866 and three penalties were issued to the nursing home.
Gunnison County, Colorado, had one public nursing home overall.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the number of older adults nationally continues to grow as the youth population declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans 65 and older increased by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The older adult population has expanded significantly over the past 100 years, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
Research published in 2021 found nearly half of this group—about 28 million people—may need long-term services and supports. The study also forecasts that over a third could eventually require care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
