Clear Creek County Government issued the following announcement on June 8.
The first ever positive rabies case in a wild animal in Clear Creek County, a skunk, was confirmed last Friday evening. There was no human exposure; the skunk got in a fight with a dog. Clear Creek County Environmental Health staff and Animal Control are working with the dog owner for proper rabies monitoring protocol.
Clear Creek County Environmental Health is urging people to be aware of their surroundings and locations of their pets. Rabies can be transferred through a bite or scratch of a rabid animal to a human or other animal. Rabies is fatal, but can be prevented by keeping pets active on their rabies vaccines, staying away from wildlife, and seeking immediate medical care if a human exposure occurs.
