Sam DiMaio capped his Colorado College lacrosse career by earning a spot on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar All-America Team, presented by Dynamic.
DiMaio, who graduated in May with a degree in economics, compiled a 3.7 grade-point average during his four years at CC.
In addition to his stellar performance in the classroom, the senior close defender posted career highs in nearly every statistical category while leading the Tigers to the Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference championship as well as the program's ninth appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
"Sam is proof that if you want it bad enough, you can do it all at the highest level at Colorado College in the classroom and on the field," head coach Mike Horowitz said.
DiMaio, the HCLC's Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference selection, recorded career highs of 28 caused turnovers and 45 ground balls, which ranked first and second on the team, respectively. His caused turnover total ranks fourth on the program's single-season list, while his ground ball mark is tied for 23rd place.
DiMaio also recorded single-game career highs with five caused turnovers during the 15-12 victory over Whittier College in the Locker-Stabler Cup, and nine ground balls at Catholic University in the fourth game of the season.
The Westport, Conn., native also helped ignite Colorado College's fast-paced transition game. DiMaio dished out a career best four assists and matched his career high of eight points. His four goals were one shy of his career high set last year.
DiMaio and Anders Erickson became the 12th and 13th Tigers to participate in the USILA's Senior All-Star Game.
Most recently, DiMaio was named an all-region selection by the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association for the second year in a row.
To qualify for the USILA's highest academic award, a nominee must be a senior with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. He also must be an All-American, a member of a North-South All-Star team or an outstanding league or conference player.
Finally, recipients will have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution and to college lacrosse both on and off the field.
The USILA's Scholar All-America Program was established in 1989 to recognize student-athletes from member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities.
