Sheriff & Coroner invite public to Open House & Free Pancake Breakfast

Looking for a fun and FREE family-friendly event this weekend? This is your chance to go behind-the-scenes with us! Climb into a SWAT vehicle, see K-9s in action, watch a vehicle extrication, pet our mounted unit horses and therapy dogs, get a tour of the Coroner’s Facility and even try out ‘maggot art.’ Plus, take a tour of our 911 dispatch center and a history tour of the sheriff’s office.

“This is our biggest event of the year,” says Sheriff Tyler Brown, “it’s all about community. Our open house gives us a chance to meet and mingle with our neighbors and really get to know the people we serve. We want to show you how we keep you safe, let you try out some of our newest equipment, answer your questions and provide a fun and memorable day for your family.”

“The Open House is a great opportunity for the Coroner’s Office to meet our community in a neutral situation, rather than during a time they are experiencing a loss,” says Dr. Kelly Lear, Arapahoe County Coroner. “Our facility tours are always popular and fill up quickly. They give citizens a (sanitized) glimpse behind the scenes and people can get answers to questions they didn’t even know they had.  Maggot art and bone identification give them a chance to interact and learn about different aspects of the professional responsibilities of the Coroner’s Office.”

Visitors can also take a tour of our 911 dispatch center and a history tour of the sheriff’s office. Did you know we’re the oldest sheriff’s office in Colorado founded in 1858? We have a lot of historic artifacts to show you!

Oh, and did we mention the FREE pancake and sausage breakfast? Bring your family & friends and explore all the different parts of ACSO. We have plenty of free parking.

*Maggot Art - blow fly larvae, better known as maggots, are an integral part of crime scene investigations and for children the art provides an interactive introduction into the life cycle of insects and the role they play in nature and decomposition. Maggot paintings are used in many classrooms throughout the country as a scientific learning tool. The Coroner’s Office gets its maggots from a fishing supply store where they are used as bait. The maggots are not harmed and only non-toxic water-based paints are used.
